Living on Air - By: Allyson Martinek
Review by: D.A. Henneman
Allyson Martinek’s experience as a “Radiogirl” in her book Living on Air, provides an inside look at the exciting, and sometimes brutal, realities of the radio industry. This book is so much more than accounting of her experiences; it is about how someone can overcome diversity by remaining positive and keeping gratitude in their heart.
Allyson’s no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is attitude made for a very enjoyable read. Although I did not tune in regularly to her show, I was able to follow her story easily. I am glad I was able to get to know her a little better and I appreciate her ability to laugh through the tears. Although she was let go under circumstances that would have made the strongest person cringe, she looked at it (and continues to) as finishing one chapter of her life, and starting another. Her ability to focus on the positive aspects of her experience, and the wonderful way she recognizes the people who helped her, is an awesome example of turning the proverbial lemons into lemonade.
If you are going through a rough patch, and need a bright light to help you through, this book could very well give you a smile when you need it most.
