Are you thinking of writing a book? Do you need some inspiration to get going? Here is a new motivation technique that is for those who like something tangible to have while working on a project.
It’s a vision cover. Yes, a vision cover. If you have ever watched the movie The Secret, you are familiar with vision boards. It is an artboard that you create with visuals and words of something you want in the future. A vision cover is a similar concept. It is a collage of the words and images associated with your book folded into the shape and size of a book.
It gives you a vision of what concepts might be in the book. There is nothing quite like holding something physical in your hand to represent your book. It provides focus and clarity while motivating you to move forward with your writing.
To create one, start with a small piece of poster board folded in half. On the cover of the vision book, you are creating put words or images that express the big idea or the hook of the book. If you already have a title, you can put that on there too. Maybe even put your name on it. These images and words can be cut from magazines or printed from the internet.
On the inside, you want to place images of the elements you want to include inside of your book. What you put in the book will be considerably different for fiction and nonfiction. For fiction, you can include pictures of what your characters will look like, major plot elements, settings, and the feelings you want your reader to have. For nonfiction, you can place images that represent the message you want to convey and the feelings you want to reader to have. In addition to this, you can put keywords and thoughts that you want to include in the book. If there is a big result they will have from reading the book, make sure to represent that too.
On the back, you will create the about the author section. On here you can place a picture of yourself if you like. Also, put words and images that represent what you want the reader to know about you and who you want to grow into or what you want your books to accomplish. For me, it was changing the world one book at a time, so I put a picture of the world.
You will find that doing this will make you think about your book and will bring new ideas and thoughts into your mind as you flip through magazines. It will give you a whole new surge of motivation for your book. It is a great way to take your big ideas and capture them in images and words on just a few surfaces of paper. When you are writing and feeling stuck, you can always come back and look at this vision cover.
Did you make one? Send us a picture when you are done.
